is it okay to ask the couple getting married for guidance on selecting their wedding gift?

I will be in China just before attending a wedding of a close friend. I thought I would buy them a nice wedding present in China, but since I'll be getting something that's obviously not on their registry back home, I thought maybe I would ask them first if they had any preferences for something from China (e.g. decorative arts vs. functional, etc?).
I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't violating some sort of etiquette by asking them about their present ahead of time (I haven't been to many weddings so I don't know the etiquette). Thanks.

It's perfectly acceptable for them to know ahead of time. That's what a registry is. The only problem is that they went to a lot of work to put the registry together - it's a real pain, and they might not want to have to come up with yet another idea. If you don't know them well enough to know if they'd prefer something functional vs something decorative, they might not really want to have to go to that effort again for your convenience. Just pick something on your own, they have to do a lot of work for the wedding, you can do your share of it by picking a gift.
